The Contribution Ratio of the Most Significant Anthropometric Measurements to the Speed of Motor Response (Simple and Complex) for Advanced Handball Goalkeepers

Abstract

  This study aims to identify the contribution ratio of selected anthropometric measurements to simple and complex reaction time among elite handball goalkeepers, given the crucial role of these variables in enhancing defensive performance. The researcher employed the descriptive survey method alongside the experimental approach. The study sample consisted of 35 goalkeepers representing clubs in the Iraqi Handball League during the 2024–2025 season. Data were collected on anthropometric variables (height, weight, arm length, leg length, and hand span) and tests were administered to measure both simple and complex reaction time, using appropriate statistical tools (multiple regression and analysis of variance). The findings revealed that certain anthropometric measurements—particularly body height, arm length, leg length, and hand span—significantly contributed to improving reaction time, whereas body weight showed no positive effect. Moreover, simple reaction time was found to be faster than complex reaction time, reflecting the physiological and cognitive demands of performance. The study concludes that anthropometric characteristics should be considered essential indicators when selecting goalkeepers, and that training programs should emphasize the development of complex reaction speed.
